Nucleus Connect and Huawei to conduct joint study on World’s First 10G GPON Open Access Network for Singapore’s Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network

Singapore, 23 June 2011 - Nucleus Connect, Singapore’s Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN) Operating Company (OpCo) and Huawei, a leading telecom solutions provider, have signed a memorandum of understanding on a joint study of the 10G GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) technology across the Next Gen NBN. Nucleus Connect will draw on its extensive next generation network experience to serve as a key technical contributor.

10G GPON is a 10Gbit/s PON technology that is fast becoming standardized for use on Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) shared access fiber optics. This technology can provide greater bandwidth—downlink speeds of up to 10Gbit/s and uplink speeds of up to 2.5Gbit/s—to be future-ready for the explosive growth in infotainment appetite and simultaneous access of multiple services such as the Internet, voice, video streaming, rich multimedia content, and emerging services like 3D TV, Ultra HD TV. This new access network technology is able to co-exist with the current GPON system perfectly, and there is no requirement to upgrade the existing ODN (Optical Distribution Network).

As part of this MOU, Nucleus Connect and Huawei will collaborate to explore the possibilities to develop the Next Generation Passive Optical Network based on Open Access for Singapore’s Next Gen NBN. Studies will be made on possible deployment scenarios like FTTC/B, Enterprise, and Mobile Backhaul for 3G & LTE, etc.

This project is the continuation of a long-standing partnership between Nucleus Connect and Huawei. In 2009, Huawei was awarded the contract to supply and build the end-to-end network solution for Nucleus Connect to develop the world’s first Open Access Network. This collaborative study is an extension of that partnership.

“We are pleased to further our relationship with Huawei by undertaking this joint study,” said Chong Siew Loong, Vice President of Networks & Systems, Nucleus Connect. “This study - the world’s first 10G GPON investigation based on an Open Access scenario - will set a global example, and we are happy to contribute as a leader in innovation and development in the next generation network arena.”

Paul Scanlan, Huawei Vice President for Southern Pacific Solution Sales and Marketing, said, “Huawei is equipped with a wealth of experience in providing cutting-edge solutions in the optical network field with the aim of boosting network capacity. We are pleased to take our partnership with Nucleus Connect to the next level by harnessing our collective expertise and experience to pave the way for the eventual deployment of 10G GPON technology across national broadband networks worldwide.”
